Myofunctional therapy is a program used to correct the proper function of the tongue and facial muscles used at rest and swallowing.

Orofacial structure and bite mechanics
Skeletal and musculature systems must work together correctly for optimal function of the face and mouth.

Treating Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders

OMDs may affect, directly and/or indirectly, breastfeeding, facial skeletal growth and development, chewing, swallowing, speech, occlusion, temporomandibular joint movement (TMJ), oral hygiene, stability of orthodontic treatment, facial aesthetics, and more.

Patients of all ages can benefit.  Therapy is suitable for everyone from young children to adults.  Treatments are stand alone or can be used as an adjunct to other corrective procedures such as orthodontics, tongue tie surgery or sleep apnea procedures.

At Myofunctional Therapy of La Jolla our treatment programs are individualized and usually consists of a regular program of exercises over a 12 month period, although treatment length may vary.  OMT is painless and the exercises are relatively simple.  Exercises are easy, fun and take only a short amount of time daily.
